Biography
Wilda was always encouraged to study art by her mother, but that did
not happen seriously until 20 years ago when she began evening classes
at the University of Tennessee.
She has studied with Alex Powers, Lee Weiss, and has taken workshops
at Arrowmont. She has also studied with Susan Webb Tregay at Kanauga
and with Cynthia Wilson at Hemlock Studios in North Carolina.
Wilda Clark is a native Tennessean — having grown up
around Knoxville — painting for 20 years in primarily
watercolor and acrylic. She ventured into printmaking 6 years
ago. Wilda has participated in juried exhibitions throughout the
Southeast, including the Artscapes Auction at the Knoxville Museum of
Art in 2001 and 2003. She won the 2-D Cash Award in the Oak Ridge
Open Show in 2003. She is a member of the Knoxville Watercolor
Society. Her work is on display at the Art Market Gallery.
Artist Statement
Although I am a studio painter, my concepts originate as I observe
nature.
My paintings reflect the exploration of ways to divide pictorial
space, intensify color, and communicate my particular vision. I let
the work speak its direction to me as I randomly lay down color and
apply texture. It is the spontaneous nature of art that excites me
and leads to a completed work. As a lifetime gardener and nature
lover, my work often reflects the elements of nature itself.
Painting provides a great joy in my life. I feel painting is a way to
work through personal dilemmas and problems. It is always such a
creative and fulfilling process that I get lost in the many ideas that
float across the paper as I work.
