Julius Pratt
Mixed media ceramic

Design and painting have always been a language I use when I talk to myself. Since childhood I have enjoyed drawing, painting, and making things. After graduating from the University of TN, I received a Master's degree from Pratt Institute. I've been a school art teacher at levels ranging from elementary through high school to college. My artistic interests have been varied - I've been an industrial product designer, furniture designer, graphic artist, aircraft flight deck designer, draftsman and computer artist, aerial photographer, and theatrical scene designer. Since retiring a year ago I have concentrated on my own artwork.

My mixed-media artwork is made from a flattened slab of clay which has been hand-built, modified and fired. The ceramic form is then colored and tinted with oil and acrylic paints, colored pencil and collage. Wires, springs, glass, small machine and electronic parts are often incorporated to create complex flowing overlapped curvilinear and geometric design elements. There is a suggestion of mechanical activity, biological growth, religious and classical symbolism, and archaic, stratified forms. Numerous unexpected jewel-like colors reflect from hidden bits of dichroic glass, holograms and metal.

I attempt to create mood and mystery in the work, although a definitive meaning is often just out of reach. Some themes are Gates, Mandalas and Shrines.
